5 - 8 minutes duration
You have to choose an issue that has been in the media since 1st September 2020 and present a persuasive speech about this issue.
You must try and convince your audience to believe the point of view that you put forward.
The most important things to remember are:
- make sure that the issue isn't too large. You need to be able to understand both sides of the issue in order to be able to make a convincing case
- you must use a variety of persuasive techniques within your speech
- there MUST be two clear cut sides to this issue - FOR AND AGAINST, otherwise it is not an issue, merely a topic
- include your sources within your speech - make references to them. For example, "the Australian Bureau of Statistics referred to...in it's 2020 study..."
- it must be interesting to be persuasive - vary your tone of voice, use facial and hand gestures, make consistent eye contact with your audience, make sure that you don't read, use cue cards only as prompts, include significant pauses
- know your material - practise, practise, practise
- begin in an engaging manner - you want to grab the audience's attention
- make sure that your arguments follow logically from each other and that you flag each new argument. E.g. Firstly, Secondly, etc. or Another argument...
- rebut the opposition's arguments logically
- conclude effectively and strongly
